The Problem with Comfort

You know which habits and behaviors are good for you and which are not.

You should do some cardio like walking, you should work out sometimes, cook healthy meals, go to bed on time…

But often you find yourself exhausted after a day’s work.

You may just skip the workout you planned, and the McDonald’s drive through is conveniently on the way home.

There wasn’t any time to go for a walk during the day either.

And as you hit the couch and turn on Netflix, laying comfortable with your take out meal, you binge watch your favorite show, and go to bed late.

Just to wake up tired the next morning and go through the same thing again.

You had a solid plan but it failed once again.

It’s not easy to break out of a cycle like that.

I’ve been there too, lived that exact sequence on autopilot.

Comfort is easy and feels good in the moment.

We don’t have to hunt, build shelters, or grow crops anymore.

We don’t have to stay in shape to be able to fight and defend our families or do anything to survive anymore.

We can simply drive to work, order food, and treat our health problems with medicine, right?

Not if you want a good quality of life.

Not if you want to live long and be healthy.

Don’t sacrifice your physical and mental health for comfort.

You’ll pay for it with bad health and costly medical bills in the future.

But don’t beat yourself up if you are in this cycle now.

We’ve all been there.

Acknowledge your situation and start one healthy habit now.

For me it started with waking up early.

The first day was rough as I got less than four hours of sleep.

Even though I went to bed early I couldn’t fall asleep as my body wasn’t used to it.

But I had made a commitment to myself.

After a few days I managed to shift my sleep schedule so that I was able to fall asleep earlier.

I was going to bed early, getting a solid eight hours of sleep, and waking up early.

After a week I started going on walks in the mornings as soon as I had woken up.

Over time I was able to stack other positive habits on top.

Nowadays I feel like a machine.

I’m at my physical best, I’m cognitively sharp in the morning and I have more than enough energy to get me through my day.

You don’t have to start your transformation by waking up early.

Maybe you’re reading this in the morning and the weather’s nice.

Then go for a walk.

Or if you’re thinking about what you should eat later, go to the supermarket, buy fresh ingredients and cook yourself a healthy meal.

Whatever it is, start now.

Stick with that single habit for a week.

Once you nail it, stack another good habit on top, and another one the week after.

Go step by step.

Your body, mind, and wallet will thank you.

There's nothing wrong with binge watching a series with some snacks once in a while.

Just make sure your "good" habits are taken care of consistently.

Don’t take good health for granted.
